It is summer time in Baker Lake (yes we get above 0°C here) which means the mosquitoes are out in full.
We heard about these creatures when we moved to Baker Lake never thinking for once that if we wanted to spend any time outside during the summer that we had to wear a bug jacket or use enough DEET to kill a small dog or had to do both!
These are not your normal variety of everyday mosquito that you find down south. No, these mosquitoes are about the size of houseflies and are notorious pack hunters. If you stand still for more than a few seconds you’ll be surrounded and it will sound like you have a helicopter right over your head! To make matters worse, these creatures fight dirty. They’ll find any exposed skin you have and go to work as quickly as possible; they even pierce through jeans and Carhartt’s. What creature of that size can do that?
I always joke with people that our yellow lab turns black in the summer with all the mosquitoes that descend on her as soon as we leave the door. Both dogs do not like this time of the year and prefer short quick walks instead of exploring the tundra except when a ground squirrel mocks them and it may be hours before we see our dogs again.
And this is just the start of the bug season, wait till the black flies come out. These guys are sneaky and find any and all access through your clothes to take a junk out of you!
Well, I guess there is one reason to enjoy the winter season up here… there are NO BUGS! Oh, and if you want a forecast check out this site, if gives forecasts for bugs! ~Sophia
