Though much all of our time at Richard’s was pretty laid back and did occasionally involve chasing lambs around out in the fields, we did get out and see some of the local sites. Prior to heading over the ‘Pond’, Sophia and I consulted with family friends John and Jean who live in Southampton, Ontario about our trip. John and Jean are retired and have done numerous trips to Great Britain, primarily County Kent; John loves Kent!! He suggested several places and was good enough to give us the low-down on English pubs, he even gave us his well used ‘The Good Pub Guide’ book. This book is The Lonely Planet version for pubs, and is huge, but thankfully there is also an ‘app’ for it.
Richard, Raquel, Sophia and I went up to see some local villages/castles and really enjoyed our day trips. Great Britain has no shortage of castles, ruins, and obviously history. While at Richard’s, we visited the village of Chilham in County Kent, it’s church and of course the White Horse Pub! The next day we headed off to the town of Rye in East Sussex. This is a pretty town along the coast where we strolled through the streets looking at sailboats, old buildings, and had real English fish n’ chips. We visited Leeds Castle on the third day, a beautiful sunny day. Leeds Castle was spectacular with its architecture, and gardens; it even had a falconry!
So after three and a bit days with Richard and Raquel at their home, Sophia and I decided to head over to Ireland for the remainder of our trip. In preparation, Richard had me drive his car around a bit to get used to driving on the opposite (left) side of the road (wrong side??). Richard was kind enough to give us a lift to Gatwick Airport to catch our flight on Ryanair, an ultra low-cost airline, to Dublin, Ireland. We stayed in Dublin for two full days to enjoy all the touristy spots!
I can’t really say enough about how appreciative Sophia and I are towards Raquel, Richard, his family, and some of their friends for making our trip over to Great Britain so much more enjoyable!! If all we did was hang out with them on this trip, that would have been fulfilling enough.
Thanks Raquel and Richard! ~Rob
