After getting back into Baker Lake on Friday after being on duty travel, Rob and I were cooped up for most of the weekend while a blizzard raged outside. The wind was so strong that we could not even see across the street for most of the two days (60 to 80 km/h, with -60C windchill). This of course did not abate our dogs interest of wanting to go outside and play. We of course on the other hand had to decline, as we were not interested in getting lost in the arctic wilderness while appeasing our dogs needs; and, we were really, really, really sick! Some flu like foreign virus caught up to us after traveling from the holidays.
Today, the weather improved and the sun showed itself over the horizon for most of the day. Rob was supposed to fly out today to Iqaluit for the next 4 weeks, but since no flights came in or out for the last few days and there was still blizzard conditions in Rankin Inlet (the connecting destination south of us), he was rescheduled to leave on Thursday instead. Apparently, all the flights are booked for the next several days and no one is getting out soon.
The below photo doesn’t look bad, but trust us, it isn’t pretty!
Finally, after two day of being house-bound, we all agreed (dogs especially) that a walk would be nice after work. By the time we decided to go for our walk this evening, the wind returned with a vengeance and it was gusting to 60 km/h with a windchill of -50°C. Ahhhhh, another breezy day in the arctic! ~ Sophia & Rob
