Rob surprised me the other day as he wanted me to show him how to use our sewing machine (plain old simple Kenmore sewing machine). Rob had learned how to sew canvas and leather as part of his trade (Bos’n) in the Canadian Navy , so after going over a few pointers, he was ready to sew. I cut out the patterns for the two hatches and three winches and he was on his way. He completed the first hatch cover and was on his way to complete the second when he broke my heavy duty needle! Lucky for him I had another one but it was not rated to sew canvas but was still a heavy duty needle. He finished sewing the second hatch cover, one winch cover and almost completed a second winch cover when Rob broke my sewing machine.
Well, we are not sure what he did, but right now we can’t use it. The needle appears to be out of alignment as it is hitting the bobbin holder every time it goes down. We phoned Kenmore to see if they could help us and their first solution was to bring it in to the store for repairs. Hmm, the closest store is about 1630 kilometres away and the cost of a flight one way is about $1200!! Thank you, but I’ll just buy a new machine in that case. After explaining our situation, the person on the phone gave me a Sears number – that is where Rob’s mom bought the machine from. When Rob got on the phone and after several frustrating minutes explaining our situation, the person online told Rob to phone back during working hours and they might be able to patch him to a technician that might explain what is wrong and/or help us fix the machine. I’m still waiting for Rob to phone the technician as we have more sewing to do!! – Sophia
