Sun Dog or Parhelion

Tonight we saw our first sundog or parhelion when we took the dogs for a walk.  It was not a complete one around the sun but enough to give us an idea that there were ice crystals in the air.  A sundog is an optical phenomenon that is sometimes observed in the sky when sunlight interacts with ice clouds or particles in the atmosphere.  The same phenomena can occur around the moon when moonlight refracts off the ice crystals in the air.  This is of course called a moondog or paraselene.  This is much rarer compared to sundogs because the moon must be bright and full for this phenomena to happen.  I have only seen moondogs a few times while living in Nunavut and it was usually on very cold, cold nights. -Sophia
